Key research accomplishments:

V.I. Petrov’s research lies in the field of pharmacology and clinical pharmacology. Mostly, he is engaged in fundamental research of neuroactive amino acids and their derivatives, searching for novel psychotropic agents based on excitatory amino acids, and studying of the safety and efficacy of medicinal products used to treat socially significant diseases. V.I. Petrov’s research team has discovered a new class of non-nucleoside viral replication inhibitors that are based on aryloxyalkyl derivatives of purine bases. These inhibitors demonstrate high antiviral activity against HIV-1 and herpesviruses. V.I. Petrov is the author of a new clinical pharmacology paradigm referred to as pharmacologistics.

Summary of publications:

V.I. Petrov is the author of more than 1200 publications, including over 140 textbooks, books, and monographs, and a holder of 89 patents for inventions. V.I. Petrov co-authored the National Clinical Pharmacology Guidelines. One of his monographs—Evolution of clinical pharmacology and therapy principles for the treatment of COVID-19 infection, published in 2021—covers the main decision-making principles and algorithms as well as clinical approaches to pharmacotherapy of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Awards:

V.I. Petrov is an Honoured Scientist and an Honoured Doctor of the Russian Federation. He is decorated with the Badge of Excellence in Healthcare of the USSR. He received two science and technology awards from the Government of the Russian Federation. V.I. Petrov holds a Certificate of Merit from the President of the Russian Federation awarded for long-term dedication to work and for efforts towards the development of healthcare and medical science. V.I. Petrov is decorated with the Paul Ehrlich Commemorative Medal and the Medal of Merit for National Healthcare. V.I. Petrov received the Order of Honour for his significant contributions to the development of medical science, creation of the clinical pharmacology school in the Russian Federation, training of healthcare professionals from Russia and over 60 other countries, and development and implementation of a number of novel and effective medicinal products. He is a holder of the Order of Friendship. He earned the Order of Alexander Nevsky for his outstanding personal merits to Russia, his long-term dedication to work, and his achievements in health protection and research.
