Research interests:
Neuropsychopharmacology, clinical and non-clinical studies of medicines, search for and study of analgesics with increased respiratory safety and low abuse potential, and translational research.
Key research accomplishments:
E.E. Zvartau was a research team leader in drug development studies (bupranal, bupraxone, ketbufen) and a team member in studies of sustained-release naltrexone formulations (prodetoxone, vivitrol). E.E. Zvartau developed methodological guidelines for non-clinical evaluation of the addictive potential of novel pharmaceuticals.

Awards:
E.E. Zvartau is decorated with the Oswald Schmiedeberg Medal and the N.P. Kravkov Medal. He received the NIH NIDA Award of Excellence for outstanding contributions to international cooperation in drug abuse research and training. E.E. Zvartau is an Honorary Member of the Latvian Society of Pharmacologists and an Honorary Doctor of the Academician I.P. Pavlov First St Petersburg State Medical University. He received the Docendo Discimus Award from the Ministry of Health of Russia for the best academic publication, the Prix Galien for HIV research in special populations, and the Saint Petersburg Government Award for outstanding contributions to higher medical education.
